Frequently Asked Questions
Why should I remove the lids from my #1 and #2 plastic bottles?Lids should be removed from #1 and #2 recyclable bottles for several reasons. Lids are typically a different plastic than the bottle and should be removed so as not to lessen the quality of the rest of the material. Next, lids can actually be a safety hazard for our Processing staff: all #1 and #2 plastic bottles are smashed into a huge bail to be efficiently shipped to market. Lids can become dangerous projectiles as the bottles are being smashed into bales. We actually get less bottles into a bail when they have lids on them because even the massive force of the baler does not always force the lids off. Think about the volume taken up by a full size 2-liter bottle, milk jug, or laundry detergent bottle versus one that is squashed. Back to TopWhy do I have to rinse and squash my recyclables, like #1 and #2 plastic bottles?Rinsing recyclables reduces the risk of attracting vermin (bugs, mice, raccoons, etc.). Squashing your #1 and #2 plastic bottles makes room for your neighbor's recyclables in the Drop-Off trailer! Think about the volume taken up by a full size 2-liter bottle, milk jug, or laundry detergent bottle versus one that is squashed. Back to TopWhy don't you accept household hazardous waste (HHW) materials every weekend in the Drive Thru or during the week?To maintain the highest level of safety for the public and for our employees, HHW collection is limited to the last Wednesday of the month, April to November, from noon to 6:00 pm. As with the above question, during our office hours the majority of our employees are busy processing recyclables for shipment, and they are not properly equipped to accept HHW (i.e. not wearing the proper level of safety equipment). Our HHW collection staff is trained to OSHA’s Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response Standard (HAZWOPER). For the convenience of our customers, we also accept general recyclables during this time. Back to TopWhy can't I bring recyclables, electronic, motor oil, etc. during your 8:30 am to 4:30 pm office hours? From Monday to Friday, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, our Operations staff processes recyclables from the 12 drop-off trailers plus the materials collected from our business and school route. For safety reasons, we choose to dedicate their time to these duties. Please visit us during our Drive Thru hours Friday from noon to 6:00 pm and Saturday from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm to drop off these materials. Back to TopWhen can I bring documents to be shredded? The Dearborn County Recycling Center contracts All Shred Business Solutions to shred confidential documents the first Monday of each month. Documents may be brought to the office during our regular operational hours, Monday through Friday 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. Those that are dropped off prior to the shredding date are stored safely on-site in locked containers. Once shredded, all paper is recycled. Please remove all plastics prior to dropping off your documents. Back to TopWhen is Creation Station open?Creation Station is open every other weekend. Please refer to our calendar for the exact weekends. Back to TopSJW
